Modernization of railway line Warszawa - Lodz
Stage I   –   section Skierniewice - Lodz Widzew

1st stage of the modernization comprised the design and execution of the rebuilding of:
1. the section Skierniewice – Koluszki (41,8 km long), the contractor of which is the joint venture managed by: : Trakcja Polska - PKRE PLC seated in Warsaw,
2.  the section Koluszki - Lodz Widzew (21 km long), the contractor of which is the joint venture managed by PKP Energetyka Ltd. seated in Warsaw.

The expected result of the modernization is increase of the speed with the use of classical rolling stock up to 140 km/h and tilting trains up to 160 km/h as well as achievement of the journey time below 75 minutes on the whole line Warszawa – Lodz, improvement of traffic safety, reduction of costs of transport and infrastructure maintenance, limitation on noise and vibrations, improvement of safety at railway crossings and reduction of pollution.

The role of BPK Poznan in the project was to coordinate the design process and to prepare, in cooperation with CBPBBK KOLPROJEKT and BPK i UI Lodz, the design documentation for the purposes of the modernization of both sections.
The scope of the design documentation for the section Skierniewice – Koluszki comprised:
●  preparation of building designs with agreements and all required approvals and permissions including a construction permit,
●  preparation of the detailed design allowing for phasing of works,
●  preparation of the technical as – built documentation.
Factual scope of the modernisation comprised:
●  rebuilding of the track lay-out to obtain the speed of V=140 km/h on the designed section and to enable trains with swinging body to travel with the speed up to 160 km/h on the whole length of the route;
●  rebuilding of the track bed to obtain proper endurance;
●  rebuilding of the engineering structures (3 bridges, 6 viaducts, 27 culverts and 3 footbridges) to adapt them to the technical conditions required for railway engineering structures „D2”, the regulation by MT i GM of 10.09.1998, the speed of 140 km/h with the ability to increase it up to 160km /h for swinging trains, and the service for the disabled;
●  rebuilding of platforms and cubature objects in relation to verification of the railway route suitable for the given speed;
●  rebuilding of railway level crossings in connection with modernization of track lay –outs;
●  rebuilding of telecommunication systems to adapt the infrastructure to the speed of 140 –160 km/h , placing route cables and a fibre – optic cable and removing cable collisions resulting from the modernization of the track lay-out;
●  rebuilding of traction network including demounting of present network and building a new one of the cross section of 320 mm2, building new networks for switch passages on stations between tracks 1 and 2 and rebuilding existing side tracks on stations in relation to rebuilding track lay-outs;
●  rebuilding of non- traction supplies  for power supply from a newly built line 15 KV by means of transformers stations SN/nn (15/0,4 kV);
●  rebuilding of power supply of 1 kV in relation with modernization of platforms, illumination of platforms, tracks and turnouts and level crossings.
Scope of design documentation for section Koluszki - Lodz Widzew:
●  pre-design works,
●  concepts for design solutions,
●  construction designs including all necessary agreements and permits together with construction permit,
●  detailed design including phasing works,
●  as-built documentation and technical documentation.
The range of works included:
●  rebuilding of track lay-out to obtain speed V=140 km/h at the section being designed and allow rolling stock with swinging body to speed of 160 km/h along the entire length of the line,
●  rebuilding of substructure and gaining proper endurance,
●  rebuilding engineering objects (11 objects for general repair, repairing 5 obiects, building passenger tunnel on Koluszki station, liquidation of 5 footbridges) in order to adapt them to technical conditions for railway engineering objects „D2” and instructions MT and GM of 10.09.1998 as well as adapting them to speed 140 km/h with ability to increase speed to 160km /h for rolling stock with swinging body and for service for the disabled,
●  rebuilding of level crossings in relation to modernization of track lay-outs,
●  rebuilding of communication systems in order to adapt infrastructure to speed 140 –160 km/h with, placing route cables and a fibre – optic cable and removing cable collisions resulting from the modernization of the track lay-out,
●  rebuilding of traction network including demounting present network and building a new one of the cross section 320 mm2, building new networks for switch passages on stations between tracks 1 and 2 and rebuilding existing side tracks on stations in relation to rebuilding track lay-outs,
●  rebuilding of non- traction supplies for power supply from a newly built line 15 KV by means of transformers stations SN/nn (15/0,4 kV),
●  rebuilding of power supply of 1 kV in relation to modernization of platforms, illumination of platforms, tracks and turnouts and level crossings.
