Building design for the reconstruction of St. Roch Bridge on the River Warta

The architectural part of the bridge reconstruction design has been developed by the project's main designer ie. Pracownia Architektoniczna Ewy i Stanislawa Sipinskich w Poznaniu (the Architectural Studio of Ewa and Stanislaw Sipinscy in Poznan). Biuro Projektow Komunikacyjnych in Poznan Ltd. has prepared constructions and foundation engineering.

St. Roch Bridge is a five - span road bridge linking the quarters of Poznan situated on both sides of the River Warta. The bridge was built in the year 1911. In the year 2000, due to construction wear and poor span condition, the decision on the rebuilding of the bridge was made. The rebuilding was supposed to be carried out allowing for:
* the requirements of the Heritage Conservator concerning the preservation of the original appearance of the bridge as the historic building.
* the requirements of the Investor ie. Zarzad Drog Miejskich w Poznaniu (City Road Management in Poznan ) relating to the method of the rebuilding taking into consideration tram, car, bicycle and pedestrian traffic, with the expansion joint only at the beginning and the end of the structure.

In order to meet the requirements of the Investor the bridge was designed for the tram rolling stock load for the load class "B" in accordance with PN-85/S-10030, the second edition.
Continuous construction was applied. The shape and the form of the bridge was maintained preserving at the same time the existing span lengths related to the center lines of supports.
The theoretical length after the rebuilding amounts to 207,10 m, the width of the supporting structure in river bed span is 27,63 m, and on flood spans -24,98 m. The river bed span was designed in steelwork. In the cross-section, the construction consists of a number of steel beams with common upper flange in the form of an orthotropic plate. Flood spans were designed as pre-stressed constructions. A static scheme of the bridge is continuous beam and arch lay-out.

Actual length of the brige is 222 m; four ferroconcrete arched spans with the span length of 70 m supported on two concrete waterside abutments and four pillars.
The structure was put into operation in the year 2004.

The project was awarded 2nd prize in the competition of the Ministry of Transportation and Building Industry for outstanding creative achievements in the year 2005 as well as 2 nd prize in the review
of the name "The Engineering Project of the year 2004'' organised by Izba Projektowania Budowlanego ( the Chamber of Constructional Designing)
